African scams

I received the following e-mail this morning from an African friend (name withheld); I believe his yahoo.fr address has been hacked:

Hello,

How are you,I am in hurry writing this mail to you, I traveled to Nigeria yesterday to visit the new researcher’s complex in lagos, Unfortunately for me all my money, diaries and my return ticket was stolen at the hotel where i lodged, I am so confused right now,I don’t know what to do or where to go,I didn’t bring my phone here and the hotel telephone line’s was burnt during the robbery incident,so i have access to only emails, Please can you send me $1,650 usd today so i can return home, As soon as i get home i would refund it immediately.I want you to send it through western union outlet.Write me so i can let you know how to send it.

Regards,

Now there are at least seven problems with this message: (1) Nothing in the e-mail indicates his relationship to me, e.g., when or where he met me; (2) This correspondant has always written to me in French; (3) It doesn’t cost $1650 US to return from Lagos to his home country (perhaps $200 by bus); (4) If he could pay me back when he got home, why not have someone from home wire him the money instead? (5) No African I know would leave his cash in his hotel room for the staff to steal. (6) He used his full name to sign off instead of only his first name which has been his custom in the past; also he has always addressed me in his e-mails with my first name, never just “hello”; (7) The story about the telephone lines at the hotel being burnt is highly implausible.

Here are my recommendations:

(1) I suggest that correspondents stop using yahoo for e-mail. Ever since Governor Sarah Palin had her e-mail hacked I’ve stopped using yahoo, and this is third African friend who has had his yahoo account infiltrated. Gmail is a good substitute.

(2) When at a cyber cafe never leave your terminal without logging off of your e-mail account. Take security measures like erasing browsing history when leaving the terminal.

(3) Use a sophisticated alphanumeric password.

Iatrogenesis and Public Health Care

Iatrogenesis is a term that hardly ever enters the public debate on health care.  Any public discussion of the socialization of health care that pays no heed to iatrogenesis is inadequate.  Awareness of iatrogenesis also would call into question the mantle of divinity that we bestow upon physicians, believing that we cannot exist without them.  Yet physicians are contributing to a serious demographic problem of negative population growth.

The word iatrogenesis comes from Greek word, “iatros” (“physician”); and “genesis” (“origin”) and refers to health problems and death caused by medical science. I was first introduced to the word “iatrogenic” by Neil Postman’s Technopoly, ch. 6; Ivan Illich has written a primer on the subject, Medical Nemesis, which is now dated but still largely valid. The first line of his book is: “The medical establishment has become a major threat to health.”

Iatrogenesis is considered by many to be the third leading cause of death in US (conservative estimates of the US death toll due to iatrogenesis to be 225,000 per annum). But I would argue that abortion is also iatrogenenic and is nearly always intentionally fatal to the unborn baby. The death toll in this case is 1.2 or 1.3 million more deaths per year. So now we are at 1.5 million per annum or so people killed in the US by medical science. But then this may only be the tip of the iceberg, since it is not in the best interests of medical practitioners to publicize the number of people they have killed. For example, AIDS may be iatrogenic, if Edward Hooper’s theory (see his book The River) that an experimental polio vaccine used in Belgian Congo in the late 1950 may be the cause of the transfer of the Simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) from chimpanzees to humans, creating HIV.  The push for assisted suicide and euthanasia will make the circle of iatrogenic death complete, from the young to the old and sick.

A discussion of public health care and socialized medicine that doesn’t take into account iatrogenesis makes an idol out of health care.  Such issues must be approached with sober judgment and care.  I am not saying that physicians can’t help the sick and the injured.  I am saying it really bothers me that we are not publicly aware of iatrogenesis, the leading cause of death.

Here are some examples of iatrogenesis:

Another victim of the Sexual Revolution? (Updated)

Farrah Fawcett, Jaclyn Smith, Kate Jackson

Farrah Fawcett, Jaclyn Smith, Kate Jackson

A sex icon when I was growing, Farah Fawcett is in the hospital. She is apparently suffering from complication related to treatment for anal cancer.  Again, the media skirts the issue of what are the main causes of anal cancer, just as when Jade Goody was dying of cervical cancer.

Cervical cancer and the lies of Sexual Revolution (Updated)

This morning I read from the AP about Jade Goody, British reality star, who at the tender age of 27 years is dying of cervical cancer.    Now my point here is not to criticize the dying woman.  Not at all.  But I want to criticize the “mainstream” media.  In its shameless promotion of the lax morals of the Sexual Revolution, it has killed millions of people around the world.  Cervical cancer is caused in nearly all cases by sexual promiscuity–not necessarily on the part of the woman dying, but it could be her partner who transmits it to her.  The sexually transmitted Human papillomavirus (HPV) which is a root factor in cervical cancer.  True monogamy, thus, eliminates the risk.
